Net Time Control Panel Copyright (C) 2002, Aaron Pulver Version: 1.0.1 Date: May 4, 2002 About ----- Net Time is a freeware control panel for the IIgs that allows you to synchronize your IIgs clock with any RFC-868 compliant time server. There is a default time server provided, but you can easily specify one of your own. Requirements ------------ Net Time should work on any IIgs that has Geoff Weiss' Time Tool Set and Richard Bennett's Marinetti 2.0.1 installed and configured. Installation ------------ To install Net Time, simply copy the NetTime file to the CDevs folder on your system drive and reboot. If you do not already have the Time Tool Set installed, also copy the TimeZone file to the CDevs folder and the Tool056 file to the Tools folder. Or, just drag and drop the files on the System folder icon, and let the Finder's magic routing put everything in the proper place. Using Net Time ------------- Open the Control Panels NDA and then open Net Time, or double-click on the NetTime file from the Finder. Enter a time server name or IP address (or leave it set to the default), and hit the Sync Now button. If Marinetti is properly connected to the Internet and your Time Zone setting is correct, your IIgs clock should be synchronized with the time server's clock. With many time servers on the Internet, but not all, this should also be quite close to the current atomic clock time. Currently, you have to manually run Net Time when you wish to synchronize your IIgs clock. If there is enough interest, version 2 will have the capability to schedule automatic updates. Semi-Technical -------------- Net Time attempts to connect to TCP port 37 on the specified time server, and if successful, retrieves a 4-byte time value (the current GMT time offset in seconds since January 1, 1900) . It then uses your time zone setting to convert this value into the correct local time before setting the IIgs clock. With Internet delays and IIgs speed, the time may end up being off by a second or two, but hey, that's life. RFC-868 specifies both TCP port 37 and UDP port 37 as valid for this service, but Net Time only tries to connect via TCP. Questions? ---------- Email: a2progeek@syndicomm.com or apulver@weygants.net Version History -------------- v1.0 - March 24, 2002 First public release --- v1.0.1 - May 4, 2002 Net Time was not correctly checking to see if the IIgs was in Daylight Savings Time. This would sometimes cause the synchronized time to be off by an hour. Fixed.
